Minutes of the December meeting of the Federal Reserve Board showed that almost all committee members agreed that the upside risks to the inflation outlook heightened, exacerbating investor concerns about the likely slowdown in rate cuts in 2025. Correspondingly, the U.S. bourse edged up on Wednesday.
The S&P 500 closed 9 points or 0.2% higher at 5,918; the Nasdaq closed 10 points lower at 19,478; and the DJIA slid 200 points at one point, but eventually closed 106 points or 0.3% higher at 42,635.
Nvidia (NVDA.US), the leader of yesterday's market decline, had a meager rebound and closed nearly flat at US$140.11. Some chip makers shrank, with AMD (AMD.US) continuing to dive more than 4% and Micron (MU.US) falling more than 2%.
Meta (META.US) faded more than 1%. Tesla (TSLA.US), narrowing its gains, closed up just 0.2%.
